Turnt Tuesdays, Thirsty Thursdays, Friyay…these are just a few of the many days of the week that people use to have fun.
Fun is a word that has many definitions. Every person has his or her own definition for these three letters. How amazing that just a three lettered word can have infinite meanings.
Going out in college is an experience. Going out means not dressing up in norts and a t-shirt, putting more eyeliner and foundation on, the glitter not only becoming an accessory, but more an essential part to your outfit, the red lipstick being reapplied multiple times, attempting to walk in wedges, and a side of you comes out that you might not have seen, and that is 100% okay!
For some, the quiet girl in the classroom breaks her shell and dances in the middle of the dance floor to all the Destiny Child throwbacks or randomly knows every word to raps no one understands. For others, the couch in the back of the party house is your comfort zone and place of solitude with all the craziness around you. I have seen people and been the person that uses these wild card evenings as a classroom to test everything or anything new.
College is a learning process and the time to see the newness in others and yourself. Let me tell you that I have been the one who pretends to know every word to a rap I have never heard, been in the center of the dance floor and have sat on the couch the entire party.
As I sit before you in my cozy bed after a night where I took the paint, glitter and lipstick off in exchange for an oversized sweat shirt, hot tea and cold pizza, it’s okay. It’s okay to be the girl who chooses to stay in, study late or watch movie marathons with a Cookout milkshake.
“Why don’t you do this?”
I received this question by a person who does not know me and I know this question pops up in all areas of life, whether that be at work, in school, casually shopping, or at a social event. Why don’t we all want to do the same things? What fun would that be if we all wanted to do the same things as everyone else all the time? The answer to that question is be you. Another three letters that have infinite definitions…Y O U. You can be whoever you want to be and do whatever pleases you.
There are nights where every adventurous bone in my body is screaming to get out so I will dress up, strut the streets and own every conversation. Then there are other nights that consist of getting dinner to-go and opening a bottle of wine at home with a Nicholas Sparks movie that will make you cry.
Every night should be a special treat for yourself because after a long and hard day, you deserve to do what you want to do. Have fun your way and never let anyone else’s plans determine yours. Someone once shared these wise words with me,
“If you do not make your own decisions, someone else will make them for you.”
Don’t let someone tell you to take off your glitter. If you want to pretend to be a Spice Girl for the evening and be girly, go for it. If you want to stay in and watch Netflix all night, embrace every episode. Don’t spend your college career scrolling through Instagram wishing you were doing what others are doing. You be you because that is a wonderful person and I promise there is someone who will either sit on the couch or dance all night with you.
Tonight I cheers my hot tea to all the girls dancing the night away or snuggled up in bed. Cheers beautiful!
